I'm trying to go into the movie with an open mind. I already know of two changes, one major and one (relatively) minor. I hope they retain the backstories for Rorschach and the Silk Spectre II.
Director Zack Snyder has said that he sees this movie as being an extended video ad for the book. If the movie gets more people to read the book, it will be well worth whatever changes he has made. And at a running time of two hours and forty-six minutes, it sounds like it will be well worth the price of admission.
Of course, the best version of this movie is the one that plays in your head when you read the Alan Moore / Dave Gibbons masterpiece, as I have at least once a year since I first bought it in the days following September 11, 2001.
Check out these two videos. The first was made as part of a competition early in the production to design a 1985-era Veidt Enterprises "Ozymandias" action figure commercial.
This one was just sent to me by a friend, and imagines what would happen to Watchmen if it became a Saturday morning cartoon show. Anyone familiar with the book will recognize the German Shepherds and butterfly with "friend to the animals" Rorschach!
"We've all heard that a million monkeys banging on a million typewriters will eventually reproduce the entire works of Shakespeare. Now, thanks to the Internet, we know this is not true."
